Defining me.

07/05/2011

I’ve been thinking a lot lately (after some recent struggles) about how I define who I am.

Think about it for a second. How do you define yourself to others?

Do you define yourself based upon your strengths? Your talents? Your hobbies? Your relationships?

I sometimes hate that question— how would you describe yourself? Is it important?

More and more I’ve been realizing how important this question truly may be. I think that it’s important to define yourself to others, but even more so–to define yourself to you.

It’s important to know who you are and what you stand for.

How would I describe myself? I don’t describe myself in terms of my hobbies or strengths. I describe myself in terms of my ethics and values. I am provided with peace of mind by knowing who I am and what I stand for. I consider myself to be honest, kind-hearted, and overly concerned with doing the right thing. Sometimes my passion for doing the right thing can get me into trouble, but more often than not I feel like this is a good thing. I am proud of values. I believe in helping others, and I believe in second chances. I am stubborn sometimes, but I will give a second chance to those who deserve it. I consider myself a genuinely positive person overall– I try to see the best in most people and in most situations.

I feel fortunate that I am able to describe myself as I did above. I think all too many people have difficulty really defining who they are and what they believe in. Personally, I don’t know where I would be without my values. They guide my actions, behaviors, goals, and conversations. My values are what get me through the most difficult days.

Even when I have to make difficult decisions I find comfort in knowing that I’ve stuck to my values and stayed true to the person I really am.

Your turn: How do you define yourself? Describe yourself. What do you believe in? How does knowing who you are provide you with strength?

This is a great post. I love what you stand for. For me – I sort of define myself by who I am, literally. A loving wife. A great friend, A hard worker. A passionate believer in good relationships. A giver.

I love the definition you give. I can definitely see value in defining yourself in terms of your roles in life!

What a great and thought provoking post! Honestly? I’m struggling with my self definition right now. I didn’t think I’d still be as unsure as I now at this age. But hey – that’s life for ya. Always throwing curve-balls when you least expect it.

Hi…thanks for the comment! Don’t worry I struggle with this sometimes, as well. Sometimes, it’s absolutely okay to not know exactly how you’d define yourself—leaves you open to more excitement and possibility.

    Have a great weekend!
